Srinagar: The much-hyped revamp of Chattabal Veer in 2009 has proved a failure as the specialized machine which would keep the river course clean is yet too installed.
In 2008-9, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department had hired a local firm to supply TRASH, a specialized river cleaner machine (made in England) so that Veer Chattabal and river Jhelum could be cleaned.
But till date the firm has not supplied the Trash cleaner machine resulting in huge damage to the river, more so since floods of September 2014, the official sources said.
IFCD officials said during rainy sessions approximately 10 metric ton of garbage gets clogged in Veer. Although the department tries to clean it manually, in vain, the sources told CNS.
They said it was clearly mentioned in the contract of said firm to provide Trash. The IFCD had fixed fencing to prevent garbage and other debris to enter into river but it was also damaged during recent floods. It was useless effort as huge waste materials cannot be controlled by just fixing of fencing. It needs TRASH, said an IFCD official.
Trash Cleaners clean up floating debris from the river and other waterways plagued with this unsightly navigational hazard, making river and waterways safe. Trash easily retrieve a wide variety of manmade and organic floating debris, including litter, old tries, leaves, timber, branches and logs, the sources said.
Despite repeated attempts, Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control did not respond. (CNS)
