The controversy surrounding NEET seems to be illogical. Given the hue and cry that is going on, it seems our education system in J&K manufactures duffers. No one thinks about the root cause of this commotion – the fear of being incapable or unequipped to tackle NEET. But why? The answer is simple. Our education system is lagging behind. We are not at par with other states. If we had a strong education system in place, we would not have been opposing this system but supporting it, given the manifold increase in opportunities and access to national level institutes.
By going to the Apex Court and invoking special status, our state has proven that we can use special status to plead for us to remain backward. It is unfortunate that these people tell the international community to recognize the talent of youth from the state but themselves doubt the very ability of their own youth. They arent sure if their youth can successfully navigate a national level exam.
People think that we are incapable and cant qualify NEET. Our colleges would be occupied by outsiders. But what is the fun of installing mindless people on the throne? How are such people expected to serve the society? They are going to destroy it. We should remember that the youth here arent less capable but less equipped. NEET will give them a chance to get selected in premier institutes outside the state.
This issue has been politicized and these people want to steal the sympathy of the people by getting the state exempted from NEET. There is no doubt that we will lose this time but in the long run, this system is going to be beneficial, provided we reform our education system and harness the ability of our youth. Our government is playing with the sentiments of people by invoking special status. They are doing this to divert the attention of the people from real issues. If NEET takes place, a few from this state will qualify it just like it happens in JEE and this will expose the reality of our education system. Those who are accountable for this mess want to be protected from this eventuality. Even our education minister is well informed about the situation that NEET will lead to. He too is evading his responsibility.
This is the 21st century and the whole world has been converted into a global village. People compete on an international level and if we arent prepared to compete even on the national level, it is our misfortune. We will have to strive for the greater good and shun our myopic vision of being backward and incapable. We should see this situation as an opportunity. It is an opportunity to rejuvenate and reform our education system and bring it on par with the national level. This isnt the time to evade responsibility. An opportunity is knocking at our door. We should not allow it to go in waste. This is the right time to fix accountability and those at the helm of affairs should try to be optimistic. Lets hope for the best.
