Students are always in a dilemma when it comes to deciding what careers to choose. Most of us either choose the same subjects that our friends choose or what our parents want us to choose. We never assess our strengths and weaknesses before deciding our career and this is why most of us lag behind.
It is quite surprising that even in the 21st century, we still cant make our own choices. People time and again regret the choices they make under someone elses influence. Every parent in our society wants their children to be either doctors or engineers. Parents here are habitual of trying to live their dreams through their children. Most of them dont even consider asking their children what they want to be before shoving their own choices on them. It is just like a lion eating her own cubs. This attitude needs to be changed if we want our valley to develop and be at par with other states.
A person who has no interest in his or her profession cant do justice to it. A person who is happy performs better than a person who feels trapped in his or her profession. How can we expect a person who isnt interested in his or her work to be sincere about it? Most often, these people find themselves in a deep abyss and drag others along with them.
In Kashmir, we have a myopic view. We dont understand that we ourselves are the reason behind our high unemployment rate. We are like a herd which tends to move together. We all want to do what our friend, neighbour or relative does. Our parents dont want us to be unique. They just want us to prove that we are better than someone elses child.
We must acknowledge diversity. Everyone cannot be a doctor or an engineer. Have you ever thought what would have happened if all our fingers were the same size? We wouldnt have been able to do any work with our hands. It is the different size of our fingers that allows us to hold things, pick up things and do all sorts of work using our hands. This is why diversity is important. Every one of us is unique and this uniqueness is what makes this world an interesting place. Had Mark Zuckerbergs parents forced him to be a doctor, we wouldnt have had Facebook today. When we choose a career we arent passionate about, we are not only committing ourselves to a mediocre life but are also robbing someone (who actually is interested in the field we have chosen) of a chance to excel. Arvind Kejriwal is an IITian. After graduation, he became an IRS officer and presently is a well-known politician. If he was interested in politics, he shouldnt have wasted taxpayers money by studying in IIT. He should have let someone who actually wanted to be an engineer study in his place. Thus, we not only have to think about ourselves but also about the greater good while choosing a career.
So let us change our modus operandi. How many times have we heard people say that this cant be done? It is our job to prove them wrong and do things rightly. Mahatma Gandhi said, We must become the change we want to see in the world. It isnt that we cant, it is just that we are afraid to. Afraid to embrace change. More often than not, we simply hide this fear by saying we cant or we arent capable enough. But if we want our society to progress, we need to change this defeatist attitude. We need to show the world that we can. We will!
