Women Oppression and Suppression – A Bygone Notion

Share

This is in response to the article “Women empowerment and the hidden bias” published in your newspaper on 5th April, 2016. Since time immemorial, women have been treated as second class citizen. Even in the confines of their own homes, women have always been dominated by men. However, the government policy of women empowerment has awakened women to the possibility of gender equality.
Women have started excelling in various fields and have even ventured into hitherto male-dominated professions. The world saw an audacious Kalpana Chawla (the Indian-American Astronaut) become a martyr while undertaking space research and furthering knowledge of the cosmos. She became a role model not only for women but for the whole mankind. Sunitha Williams, another astronaut, followed in Kalpana’s footsteps successfully. It’s heartening to note that the ‘fairer sex’ is joining the Indian Air Force as pilots and Navy commanders. Women have proved that they are no less capable than their male counterparts. Kudos to such strong brave women. So, the concept of women oppression is a remnant of a bygone era. Women have moved on. It’s time the rest of the world moved on too.
