Srinagar: More than a dozen sheep were killed in two separate leopard attacks in Pulwama and Budgam districts of Kashmir Valley last night.
A leopard reportedly sneaked into a shed belonging to one Abdul Kabir Sofi of Astanpora, Rahmoo killing at least six sheep while injuring several others.
Locals on the occasion alleged that the wildlife authorities have failed to check the rampant movement of the wild animal.
The leopard has made frequent appearances in the areas past few weeks, while it also made several abortive bids on cattle sheds in different places, the locals said while adding that despite informing the concerned authorities on several occasions nothing significant has been achieved by them up to now.
Even after the attack on a local shepherd, the authorities are yet to respond, they said.
In another similar incident, about a dozen sheep were killed at Lanura village of Khansahab in Budgam district last night.
Pertinent to mention that a shepherd of Tujan area of the district in an attempt to save his sheep sustained severe wounds after the leopard attacked the herd last week. The shepherd, Aziz Ahmad Chopan, has been undergoing a treatment at B&Js Hospital in Srinagar, the reports added.
Meanwhile, a police team visited the affected family to assess the situation while a wildlife team was deputed to lookout for the leopard, the reports added.
The territories, in which the wild animals roamed freely some time ago, are have been encroached upon by locals resulting in the man-animal conflict. Its not the wild animals that should be blamed for such attacks, a wildlife conservationist, Farooq Shah, said. The animal has a definite jurisdiction which unfortunately has fallen prey to the greed of human beings.
