Clashes leave many injured in South Kashmir

Pulwama: Several protesters were injured when they attacked government forces with stones in Lelhar and Kakapora areas of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The clashes between government forces and locals triggered when Army personnel from 50 RR along with SOG and CRPF cordoned off Lelhar hamlet. The village was cordoned off after the government forces received inputs about the presence of Lashkar-e-Toiba militants in the area.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that shortly after government forces started search operation, scores of youth assembled at one place and resorted to heavy stone-pelting. Forces exercised maximum restraint, however, when the protesting youth did not budge, troopers burst tear-smoke shells.

Reports said that during the two hours long search operation, the protesters continued to pelt stones. Unconfirmed reports said that two LeT militants managed to break the cordon due to stiff resistance showed by the local protesters.

According to reports, protesting youth attacked the Army vehicles with stones near Mohanvij area when they were returning to their camp after the culmination of search operation. The violent clashes left many protesters and government troopers injured. The clashes according to eye-witnesses continued for hours. (CNS)
