Ration scam surfaces in Budgam, 45000 quintals of rice embezzled

Srinagar : The allocation of 45000 quintals of rice meant for the public distribution in district Budgam for the month of January has gone missing and the top officials of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department (CA&PD) are feigning ignorance about the matter.

A senior CAPD official on condition of anonymity said that 32400 quintals of ration under normal quota and 13200 quintals extra rice as per the census 2011 was allotted to district Budgam for public distribution from FCI Godown Budgam. “But no ration was provided to the general public nor is available in any Godown of CAPD Budgam and has gone missing,” the official said.

A delegation of residents of Budgam district said they didn’t receive any ration quota for the said month.”In the month of January, instead of ration we were handed over slips and asked to get the January quota next month”.

The residents of Dooru, Chakle Khan ,Seban and Reshipora said they didn’t receive any ration in the month of January and February. They alleged that CAPD officials in Budgam are selling the food grains in black market and not distributing it among the deserving consumers.

Accusing CAPD officials for misappropriating the ration quota, locals said that it is the third time when there is misappropriation of ration in the district Budgam.

Earlier ration scam came to the fore in 2014 when around 3000 quintals of rice went missing from a granary in Chadoora area of Budgam district. But no action was taken against the erring officials nor any recovery was made from them.

While during the September Floods Assistant Director CAPD Budgam was suspended over 10,000 quintals of rice meant for flood relief were missing. The state government is still clueless where the disappeared rice had gone.

“Such is the height of negligence that the tainted Assistant Director who was suspended has been reinstated under no71-CAPD of 2014 dated 16-10-2014,” the locals said.

The locals said that the department should be held responsible for such kind of fraud and they will come onto the streets if the government fails to provide them ration.

When contacted Director CAPD Mushtaq Ahmad Shah told GNS that we have send requisite quota to the district. Now if people are saying that they have not received ration we look into it.
