Documents of 60 cabs impounded due to overcharging

Srinagar: To curb overcharging, documents of 60 vehicles at the famous hill resort of Sonamarg along Srinagar-Leh national highway were Tuesday impounded during a surprise inspection by state authorities.

A joint team of tourism, police and Regional Transport Office conducted the inspection at Sonamarg hill resort, 90 km from here, following complaints of overcharging by cab operators, an official spokesman said.

The joint team headed by Director Tourism, Kashmir, M A Shah impounded documents of 60 vehicles due to overcharging, he said.

Shah directed Sonamarg Development Authority, Motor Vehicles Department and tourist police to carry out periodic drives against the violators for checking the rates so that tourists do not face any inconvenience.

Later, Shah chaired a meeting with the taxi operators, ponywalas and office bearers of local market committee and discussed upgradation of amenities along Srinagar-Sonamarg route for tourists.

The meeting also decided that flyers indicating rates will be provided at the entry point so that tourists get first hand information about the rates and places of attraction, the spokesman said.
