Srinagar: They clean half of the city and ensure proper sanitation, but the place where they live is simply a stinking pit as the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is yet to appoint sweepers for the area.
Pamposh colony, Palpora not more than 10 kilometers from city center Lal Chowk, has population of more than 500 people out of which some 70 persons are working as sweepers (Safaiwalas) in SMC. The alleged apathy from the administration part can be gauged from the fact that SMC has not appointed even a single sweeper for the area.
Life has become miserable for the whole populace. Choked drains, water logged streets and improper sanitation describes the picture of the area.
The locals have now started digging potholes to avoid more water logging. If we dont dig potholes in our courtyards water will enter inside houses. We are living in mess. Authorities should at least have mercy on us, said a local. The locals say that it is true most of the people living here are poor but are humans like those people who are living in posh areas.
Moreover, the inner lanes of the area are damped in water and heaps of garbage could be seen lying on roadsides. Most of the people here are working as sweepers in SMC but we dont know why the authorities hesitate to appoint a few for cleanliness for our area.
Although, the SMC Karamcharies of the area have apprised the higher authorities regarding the matter but their pleas have fallen flat till date. (PTK)
