After Mufti Mohammad Sayeeds death, it was expected that Mehbooba Mufti would take the oath within a few days and become the first woman CM of the state. But surprisingly, she refused to take the oath and kept everyone guessing. Even though a meeting comprising of the partys leadership was convened at her Srinagar residence, nothing was stated about the outcome of this meeting. Only her brother, Tasaduq Mufti [a Bollywood cinematographer] was introduced at this meeting. After her meeting with the Governor of the state, Mehbooba spoke to the media for the first time since her fathers death and demanded some confidence building measures from the Government of India. According to her, these CBMs were the key factors for formation of the new government. She then met the BJP Party President, Mr. Amit Shah, in New Delhi but the dead lock remained. Unexpectedly, within twenty four hours, a meeting between the Prime Minster of India and Ms. Mehbooba Mufti was arranged in New Delhi. This meeting lasted for just twenty five minutes. At the end of the meeting, it was quite evident that the previous alliance would be continued. After reaching Srinagar, she was elected as the leader by the party thus putting to rest any doubts about her becoming the CM of the state.
The question is why was such a long time taken by the PDP to form the government? What kind of assurances from the BJP resulted in such a speedy implementation of the agenda of alliance, a sacred document for PDP? What CBMs have been fulfilled by the government of India? The leadership from both the parties should come forward and answer these questions. Otherwise, a common man is justified in saying that this delay in the government formation was just a political drama and suspense was created to divert the attention of people from the differences that had erupted between the party leadership. As soon as these differences were resolved, it took no time to embrace BJP once again. Now when PDP has chosen BJP as its partner in running the government, why did the PDP leadership fail to react to the statement of the BJP national general secretary in which he rejected the new demands of PDP? He even stated that the new government will be formed on the same agreements reached between the two parties during Mufti Sayeeds rule. Everybody is well aware about how the BJP ignored the PDPs agenda of alliance and tried to impose its own agenda and ideology by banning beef in the state, challenging the revocation of article 370 in the Supreme Court, opposing the revocation of AFSPA, giving state subjects to West Pakistan refugees in order to change the demography of the state and much more.
Will Mehbooba Mufti be able to put a stop to all this after becoming the CM of the state? Can she succeed in implementing the PDPs agenda of alliance? Can she set political prisoners free and get back power projects from New Delhi? Will she finally be able to free the valley from the grips of AFSPA? If she succeeds in doing this, then she is a winner and truly deserves to be a leader. If not, then she is no better than her predecessors who are only concerned about themselves and hardly care about the welfare of the state.
