Pulwama:Miscreants Thursday damaged at least 20 trucks of State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) that had arrived in Khrew area of South Kashmirs Pulwama district to load cement bags from different cement factories. The miscreants tried to set some SRTC trucks on fire but the timely action from police forced miscreants to disperse from the area.
Pertinently, the two truckers unions in Khrew area are on strike for past more than a month because of a rift between them over the share in the transportation of the cement.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr Asghar Samoon after hearing the parties had on March 23 ordered the striking truckers to resume their service so as to ensure the supply of cement from the area.
In his order the Div Com had said that they (the two truckers unions) have created nuisance in the area and to maintain law and order in the area SP Awantipora shall take a written bond from both the parties to maintain peace in the area.
The Div Com had ordered that in case they breached the bond they shall be booked under law.
In defiance of divisional administration orders to resume work, the truckers in South Kashmirs Khrew continued their strike resulting in disruption of supplies of cement to the market.
On the directions of Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, the SRTC tucks were sent to Khrew to supply cement to markets. However, witnesses told CNS that as soon as the SRTC trucks arrived in Khrew, scores of miscreants appeared in the area and targeted them with stones. After heavy stone-pelting on the SRTC trucks, the miscreants targeted drives and thrashed them mercilessly. Some of the miscreants opened the oil tanks of the trucks and tried to set them on fire, however, timely action from the police forced them to retreat from the spot, the eyewitnesses said.
They pounced upon us and thrashed us. They even tried to set our trucks on fire, an SRTC driver told CNS.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held at Awantipora in which Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Niraj Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of Police, SSP Awantipora, ADC Pulwama, RTO Kashmir, ARTO Pulwama and the representatives of Truck Unions were present.
As per the decision Tehsildar Pampore, ARTO Pulwama, Executive Officer MC, Khrew and Naib Tehsildar Khrew shall regulate the business of all trucks on the basis of rotation. ARTO Pulwama and Naib Tehsildar Khrew shall prepare and issue coupons to the truckers for the purpose and no Union shall be involved in it.
Any unscrupulous element trying to violate the atmosphere and prevent the constituted body to exercise their mandate shall be booked under the relevant provisions of law including the provisions of Regulation of Essential. (CNS)
