Srinagar: A large gathering of Jewellers associated with Anjuman-i-Zargaran and Kashmir Gold Dealers Association, Srinagar Monday took out a protest rally against one per cent excise duty on gold and marched across downtown. The rally culminated at Khayam Chowk.
Protesting Jewelers were demanding the roll back of 1% levy of excise duty on gold which according to them was against the interest of both jewelers and their customers.
The protest rally started from Saraf Kadal and marched upto Khayam Chowk this afternoon.
The peaceful rally, consisting of hundreds of Jewellers and gold dealers was led by Mr. Bahu-ud-din (President, Zargaran Association, Saraf Kadal) and Bashir Ahmad Rather, President Jewellers Association Lal Chowk, Srinagar.
Our union met the concerned authorities many times but they are paying no attention to our pleas and nothing has been done in this regard. We are being pushed to wall, a jeweller Sajad Iqbal said.
“Government should immediately admit it and roll back this extra burden of excise duty, failing which we would be forced to come on streets and intensify our strike,” Sajad added.
It is pertinent to mention that Downtown Jewellers have been observing hunger strike and shutdowns to protest 1 per cent levy of excise duty on gold by Government of India and this shutdown by jewellers across the valley has been affecting the customers badly as the wedding season is about to commence here.
Protesting jewellers appealed Kashmiri parliamentarians to take up their issue with the central authorities.
