Mirwaiz pays tributes to Andrabi

Srinagar: Paying glowing tributes to the prominent Kashmiri human rights lawyer, Jalil Andrabi on his 20th martyrdom anniversary, Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Saturday said his extrajudicial execution by government forces was highly unfortunate.

The Mirwaiz said Andrabi’s loss was damaging for Kashmir as he used to fight for the justice of the oppressed people and the victims of the human rights abuses.

The body of Andrabi, who was detained on March 8, 1996, in Srinagar by Major Avtar Singh of the 35th Rashtriya Rifles unit of the Indian Army, was three weeks later found floating in River Jhelum.

The Hurriyat (M) Chairman said that the autopsy on Andrabi had proved that he had been killed days after his arrest and as such was a victim of the custodial killings.

He said Andrabi was one of the real heroes of Kashmir who had sacrificed his life by standing up against oppression and suppression and by being the voice of the voiceless.

The Mirwaiz said Andrabi might have been killed but his voice could not be silenced nor would be the voice of countless Kashmiris whose voice was being stifled with oppressive tactics. (KNS)
