Stop Stereotyping Kashmiris as Terrorists

Share

Kashmiris have become targets and victims of stereotyping. Every time there is any untoward incident in the country, Kashmiris have to bear the brunt of it. Be it protests or terrorist attacks, it is the poor Kashmiris who are targeted and harassed. Take the recent Mohali incident and how Kashmiris were harassed despite lack of any concrete evidence. Literally framed as terrorists, Kashmiris living outside the valley are living in constant fear. Raids, ransacking and being questioned are quite commonly used by certain agencies to create fear among the Kashmiris living outside the state. Thus, a constant feeling of fear and anxiety comes with living outside the state. Since 1947, Kashmiris are living a life full of fear and worry within as well as outside their state. It seems as if Kashmiris are hated everywhere and by everyone. This hatred gets ignited whenever there is any untoward incident in our country. Many Kashmiris have been and are being framed under false and baseless allegations every day. The word Kashmiri has unfortunately become the face of a terrorist in our country. If you are a Kashmiri, you are automatically a Pakistani supporter and thus a terrorist in our so called secular country. Justice system of our country doesn’t rest until at least one Kashmiri is accused and punished for any untoward incident that ever takes place.

The recent storm of events at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi or the subsequent events at another university in Kolkata or even the recent thrashing of Kashmiris in Mohali area of Punjab have only one thing common – Kashmiris were victimized in all the three events. These events created a turbulent atmosphere in the Capital City and also in Kolkata. Kashmiris, who are always being made scapegoats by the media and the so called nationalists of our country, were once again dragged into the mud and harassed everywhere including the capital city, New Delhi. This included Kashmiri students and those working in various places in Delhi. This stereotyping creates a state of trauma and can lead to depression. No doubt Kashmiris live in a conflict zone but stereotyping them sends a bad message and must be stopped at once.
