WHERE THE MIND IS FULL OF FEAR

A few months ago we were discussing the political situation of Kashmir with our teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole session where things ranged from Pakistan to India, Kashmir to Manipur etc. In the midst of the discussion, our teacher said, “whatever I do, I’m always afraid some untoward incident will follow it”. What he meant was that whenever he does something like driving his car or going grocery shopping, he is worried that he might be hurt.  Now you might think of him as a pessimist but if you happen to be a Kashmiri, you will be quite familiar with this fear. Decades of turmoil have robbed us of our sense of safety. We are still drowned in the murky pond of uncertainties and fear. Our land is yet to see sunshine.

We live in a part of the world where even a simple morning walk can be deemed as a suspicious activity. Brutal killings, molestations, murders, fetters, jails, AFSPA, PSAs are everyday words. For a stone pelter, a bullet is the Hobson’s choice. Thus many people, in the prime of their youth, fall prey to the poisonous fangs of ASPA and for the rest of us, it is like a Sword of Damocles, waiting to fall on our heads. Innocent people are made guinea pigs in the name of national security and sent to the city of unmarked graves for eternal sleep. Our political system allows ruthless ideologies to prosper and flourish. Our political system makes a mockery of justice and the speeches of our politicians are an insult to the injury.  Murders, rapes, brutal killings are justified under the name of national security. The dignities of the daughters of the soil are sold to protect the beasts cloaked in the uniforms of guards. Our protectors are our murderers. Our faces are masks of fear. Is there no one to save our oppressed souls? Is there no one to hear our cries? Will we ever be free from enslavement? Will we ever be able to roam around freely without any fear?
