Srinagar: Day after Kashmiri students studying in Mewar University of Rajasthan were attacked by a mob over the suspicion of beef consumption and four of the them detained by police, a forensic report on Wednesday confirmed that the students had not consumed beef. All the four detained Kashmiris were released by police following the report.
According to the Station House Officer Gangrar, Labhu Ram the meat samples sent for forensic analysis confirmed it was not beef.
After confirmation, the police officer said, four students hailing from Kashmir have been released. There was no reason for us to keep them in the custody and all of them have been released, he said. The four students detained and now released are Shakeeb Hafeez, Showkat Ali Bhat, Muhammad Maqbool and Hilal Farooqi.
When asked whether police would initiate action against the attackers who pelted stones on Kashmiri students rooms, the officer said they have filed a case against those involved on the stone-pelting.
Meanwhile, a student of the varsity said that the management of Mewar University has directed Kashmiri students not go outside their hostel. They have been virtually detained. Though the tensions have subsidized but the fear continues to prevail. The students fear renewed attacks, he said.
Parents of some students who are studying in Mewar varsity while expressing concern over the attack on their wards appealed J&K authorities to intervene in the matter and ensure security of their children.
Meanwhile, AICURD Chairperson and Awami Ithead Front president Rabia Baji while condemning the attack on the Kashmiri students sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi into the matter.
The attack is highly condemnable, Rabia, a student of the varsity said. There is no doubt that the vested interests for their petty political gains orchestrate such attacks. Otherwise, in a place where Mewar University is located, there is no question of beef being sold in open markets because of Hindu majority.
Rabia alleged that the attack was aimed to destroy the career of Kashmiri students. The conspiracies are being hatched to destroy the careers of Kashmiri students. But we wont allow such conspiracies to succeed. I will take up the matter at the highest level and I also appeal Prime Minister to order an investigation into the whole matter, she added.
At least 1200 students from Kashmir were held hostage by Hindu fanatics after rumours that four Kashmiri students have cooked beef in their hostel room in Mewar University of Chittor Garh Rajhstan.
Please save us from these fanatics. They belong to RSS and want to target us, a Kashmiri student called up a local news agency.
Reports from Mewar University Chittorgarh Rajhstan said that a few Dogra students from Jammu spread a word in the University that four Kashmiri Muslim students have cooked beef in their hostel. Though the students did not take these rumours seriously, however a large number of supporters from Rashtriya Swam Sangh (RSS) assembled outside the University gates and started raising anti-Kashmir and anti-Muslim slogans.
The activists tried to break the lock of the gate, however the University authorities did not allow them to enter into the premises. Some of them beat up few Kashmiri students who locked up themselves in their hostel rooms, the students said.
According to a University official, some miscreants had spread the rumour to create law and order problem. We have identified these rumour monger students and have already taken them to task, he said.
Some mischief mongers spread rumours that the students were cooking beef. But prima facie it didnt look like beef. We have sent it for forensic testing just to be sure, Chittorgarh superintendent of police Prasanna Khamesara said.
Pertinently, A 50-year-old man, Mohammad Akhlaq, was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son severely injured last year in UPs Dadri, allegedly by residents of Bisara village, after rumours spread in the area about the family storing and consuming beef, police said.
Forensic analysis had later on confirmed the meat was in fact mutton.
