Srinagar: Reacting promptly to a news report published in Kashmir Observers Sunday edition titled In Anantnag, Education takes refuge in a cowshed, Director School Education and CEO Anantnag have ordered relocation of the school and immediate construction of a new school building atAadkalni, Brakpora.
A primary government school located at Aadkalni Brakpora in Anantnag District, with around 90 students studying in a three-room kaccha house where one room is officially sanctioned to a cow and two rooms to these poor children, became an object of ridicule for the education department after being reported in Kashmir Observer.
The school is still being run in the same temporary building it was established in twenty years back. The students have rather unusual companions- Cows which are housed in one of the three rooms allotted to the school.
While this may be a golden opportunity to the cows as they get free lessons along with hay, the poor students have no toilets or proper doors and windows.
This primary school is one of the hundreds of similar government run schools which lie in dilapidated conditions. The huge budget allocated for construction of proper school buildings has failed to escape the pockets of greedy officials. The officials are busy filling their coffers at the cost of dreams of hundreds of small kids.
Education is a distant dream for our kids as studying in government run schools which hardly have proper working classrooms, our children lack the same exposure and facilities available to the rich kids whose parents can afford to send them to private schools, said Abdul Raheem, father of a student studying in the same school.
Although the teachers of Brakpora Primary School have raised this issue with the Zonal education officer several times, nothing substantial has been done yet on the ground. A teacher requesting anonymity said, We are operating five classes in just two rooms. No one cares about the discomfort and the problems the students face studying in a place like this.
The news report has left the concerned officials and Director Education J&K, who beat drums about providing quality education in the state, red faced. With summer season only months away, things are going to get a lot worse, as the school is without any fans, toilets or drinking water facilities, he further added.
Dr Shah Faisal, Director School Education said, I have taken due note of the matter and same has been discussed with the CEO Anantnag as well. Until the building is constructed, the students will be shifted to a better place and proper facilities will be provided to them.
