SRINAGAR: Kashmir plains on Friday were lashed with moderate to heavy rains while snowfall was reported from upper reaches. Owing to rains and snow, the Divisional Administration issued a medium danger avalanche warning across the Valley.
Rains started in the wee hours of Friday and continued throughout the day.
The MeT department had already predicted the rains owing to fresh Western Disturbances. The rains are expected to continue till March 13, said an official of the MeT Department Kashmir.
He said while Widespread (WS) rains are predicted on March 12, there would be decrease in the precipitation from March 13 and improvement from March. There is no immediate flood threat in Valley and people need not to panic, the official said.
Due to heavy rains, there has been increase of water level in Jhelum and other water bodies. According to Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh was 3.85 feet at 5:00 pm, 1.5 feet at Sangam and 2.16 feet at Asham.
Due to heavy downpour, the day temperature in Srinagar saw a decrease and it was 10.4 degree Celsius while the minimum was 8.5.
Upper reaches of the Valley including Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam received fresh snow.
Meanwhile, Divisional administration Kashmir said that in view of the weather predictions made by Indian Metrological Department and Communication received from Director, Ministry of Defence, Snow and Avalanche Study Extt, Chandigarh, a medium danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas above 300 meters in all districts of the valley.
In this connection people are advised not to venture in steep avalanche prone areas during next 48 hours. The inclement weather may also trigger landslide and blockage of roads in vulnerable areas, it said, adding, Accordingly all the Deputy Commissioners have been asked to monitor the situation and take immediate necessary precautionary measures in such areas to avoid any loss of life or property.
