SRINAGAR: A medium danger avalanche warning has been issued for areas above 300 meters in all districts of the Kashmir valley.
An official spokesman said here this evening that Divisional administration Kashmir has informed that in view of the weather predictions made by Indian Metrological Department and Communication received from Director, Ministry of Defence, Snow and Avalanche Study Extt, Chandigarh, a medium danger avalanche warning exists for avalanche prone areas above 300 mtrs in all districts of the valley.
In this connection people are advised not to venture in steep avalanche prone areas during next 48 hours. The inclement weather may also trigger landslide and blockage of roads in vulnerable areas. Accordingly all the Deputy Commissioners have been asked to monitor the situation and take immediate necessary precautionary measures in such areas to avoid any loss of life or property.
Meanwhile, the administration has established control rooms at district headquarters for the convenience of the people to tackle any eventuality.
Srinagar-Jammu Highway closed
Incessant snowfall and rains on Thursday led to the closure of the valleys arterial Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and brought relief from a long spell of dry weather in Kashmir.
Traffic on the valleys main highway that connects Srinagar and Jammu was suspended during the day due to landslides and heavy snowfall along the route. In view of rain or snowfall at various places on the national highway and triggering of landslides, no fresh movement of traffic shall be allowed on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway till further orders, a traffic police official said.
Several vehicles remained stranded on the highway between Udhampur and Banihal and road clearance operations continued during the day. Inclement weather also affected the normal life in valley with electricity remaining disrupted in many areas.
Police put on high alert
Jammu and Kashmir police has been put on high alert in view of heavy rains and snowfall forecast across the state.
Director General of Police (DGP), K Rajendra Kumar on Friday ordered the police to remain on alert and mobilise men and machinery to assist civil administration in case of any exigency, an official spokesperson said.
He directed all police formations including SDRF, Executive and Armed Police to be vigilant and act quickly in case of any eventuality. Officers have been directed to ensure road connectivity in remote areas, the spokesman said. “Communication network shall also be geared up to ensure coordination among different formation for which Police Control Rooms shall function round the clock,” he said.
