Srinagar: The Valley jewellers Thursday observed complete shutdown and staged sit-in to protest against 1 per cent levy of excise duty on Gold by Government of India.
The jewelers pegged their tents in different places in the Valley especially in Srinagar city and also organized a signature campaign to mark the protest against GoI.
While talking to KNS, a member of Kashmir Gold Jewelers Association (Anjumani Zargaraan) told KNS that the authorities seem reluctant to redress their genuine demands. We pleaded several times before them but unfortunately nothing favorable has been done so far, he said.
He said that the Sher-e-Khaas jewelers earlier observed hunger strike to press the Government of India for the redressal of their genuine demands but to no avail. Today, the jewelers across the Valley observed complete shutdown and the shutdown will continue till the demands wont met, he said.
Appealing Government of India to take immediate steps in this regard, he said that announcing one percent levy of excise duty on gold brought anguish among them The announced statement should be taken into serious consideration so that it would accommodate the aspirations of the jewelers, he said.
Threatening of valley-wide agitation, he said that in case the Government of India will fail to redress their genuine demands then they will come on streets.
Pertinently, Sheher-e-Khaas-based Jewelers had called for hunger strike on Wednesday to protest 1 per cent levy of excise duty on Gold by Government of India but the same has been extending due to the non redressal of the demands.
