Srinagar: Digital libraries can go a long way in fulfilling the growing needs of academicians, researchers and students, experts said on Wednesday.

KU’s Dean of Research Prof Sheikh Javid Ahmad said digital libraries are “important for helping researchers to get access to quality literature and use the benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Libraries have now embraced the ICT to serve their users better.”

He was speaking at the inaugural function of a 2-day national-level seminar ‘Emerging Frontiers of Digital Libraries’ at the University of Kashmir. The seminar has been organized by the University’s Department of Library & Information Science (DLIS) and sponsored by the UGC.

In his keynote address, Dr Gayas Makhdumi, Librarian and Head of Library & Information Science Department at Jamia Millia Islamia emphasized upon the role played by libraries in research. He highlighted various Digital Library initiatives taken in US, UK and India which have gone a long way in meeting the researchers’ needs more effectively.

In his welcome address, Dr Abdul Majid Baba, KU Librarian and Head of its DLIS highlighted the importance of ICT and its impact on libraries. “Digital libraries have facilitated the work of present researchers,” he said, and mentioned the challenges posed by e-resources and digital libraries.

Dr Shabir Ahmad and Dr Sumeer Gul from KU’s DLIS presented vote of thanks and conducted proceedings of the seminar, respectively.
