Women’s Day: Woman, Thy Name Is Sobriety!

I did not come this far, to only come this far! As I sit, punching the buttons of my laptop, to carve some magic out of my words, I recollect my journey! A journey of tolerance, courage, pain, happiness, success, guilt, hard work and most importantly patience! When I was in my teens, I never thought this journey would be so exhilarating and daunting! I had my own convictions and belief system that made me believe that this planet is safe, pure, harmless and united. But, sometimes dreams break and so do our convictions! To begin with, it has never been easy to live in this world heavily dominated by men! I do not want to sound pessimistic, but this is what the reality is! Unless you are a woman, you can never feel what it means to be one. Wearing pants and letting your hair down by no means make you an emancipated and liberating woman, there is much more to this hollow concept of emancipation! But, unfortunately all these slogans go to winds when it is time to practice them!

We claim to be the champion of women rights, but if we go by records, it hangs our heads down in shame. As per a survey according to wonderlist, India is the 8th most unsafe country for women .Don’t let India’s flashy love stories full of dance and songs fool you. India has been under fire for its inhumane neglect of women’s rights. This is the pathetic situation that we have landed in, so how can we boast of living in times where woman is safe and secure. No matter how powerful a girl is, No matter how much successful she is, no matter how many achievements she has in her kitty, she will still be a delicate, fearful and docile lady, who lives in the constant fear of maintaining her chastity and character. It is very unfortunate that we are responsible for this contamination in the society. I purposely used the word “contamination” because I am compelled to say so. Seeing the mushrooming cases of rapes, molestations, domestic violence and eve-teasing in our society! I personally have witnessed umpteen cases where women have been subjected to worst forms of physical and mental torture. I once met a girl in a hospital waiting room, hardly in her twenties, she was crying bitterly, when I asked for the reason, she bursted in tears, narrating her gory story of how she was drugged and impregnated by a rascal who fled away! It is hard for me to trust any man because journalism has introduced me to such stories where I believe there is a small monster in every man! The degree of monstrosity may vary, but the monster is there! Well, I may sound like a hardcore feminist, but this is how circumstances have made me.

Every year, I wish I could write something positive and inspiring on international Woman’s day, but when I check my databases, the haunting stories of women surpass the inspiring ones, so I have to write and clear the rust off people’s mind who think that emancipation is the new trend that has set in. A woman can claim to be emancipated when she gets due respect from her male counterparts and is not just seen a sex symbol. A woman can claim to be emancipated when she is not seen as an outsider by her in laws, when she does not suffer from physical and mental abuses, when she is safe in any other place expect her mother’s womb! Having chosen few women celebrities like Aishwariya Rai and Emma Watson as global ambassadors who walk in obscene clothes and talk about woman emancipation is surely not my definition of women empowerment, instead, when a woman is not banned from observing hijaab, when she is not discriminated against her color, when she is not made a victim of male chauvinism, that is the day when emancipation will set in!
