Share

Kupwara: Inhabitants of frontier Kupwara district Thursday protested against authorities for failing to provide them the safe drinking water and power supply.

The protestors including women blocked the Lolab-Kupwara road near Madmagu Kalaroose demanding immediate restoration of water and power supply which they said was affected for past few months.

Protesters raised slogans against Public Health Engineering (PHE) department and against PDD. They were demanding that the power supply to the area may be restored to the normal at the earliest.

“We are being forced to use contaminated water due to the shortage of potable water,” said Farooq Ahmad, from Kalaroose village.

Some other residents said that due to the incessant rains during past, the water in nullahs and ponds has become muddy and unsafe for human consumption.

“Now that alternative sources of water have been rendered unsafe due to the incessant rains, we are left with no source of potable water. The department concerned is testing our patience,” said Sarwa Begum, from Madmagu Kalaroose.

“Although we are made to pay power tariff according to the curtailment schedule but power is never supplied according to this schedule. For past few months, power is playing hide and seek and often goes off for hours together in the evenings,”

SHO Kupwara, Showket Ahmad Mir assured the protestors that authorities concerned would be apprised of their genuine demand. (KNS)
