Div Com for restoration of all streetlights within two weeks

SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon today directed the concerned officials to ensure cent percent working of all streetlights in Kashmir division and fast tracking their replacement with LED lighting.

While chairing a meeting to review the status of functioning of streetlights in the valley, Dr. Samoon said that the illuminated streets are essential for general public particularly for the safety of women and children. The meeting was attended by officials of tourism department, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, PDD, UEED, UDAC and other concerned officials.

The meeting was informed that SMC operates around 50,000 streetlights in the city, out of which 35000 are functional. The Divisional Commissioner directed the SMC to ensure the working of remaining 15000 streetlights within the next two weeks. He was informed that the corporation has already placed an order for 4200 LED lights as part of phase wise conversion of all streetlights to efficient lighting and directed the SMC to fast track the entire process.

Officials of Urban Local Bodies informed the meeting that the department operates around 4000 streetlights in 40 towns whereas Director Tourism operates 635 lights in and around tourist places. Housing Board has also installed 742 lights. It was also decided that all streetlights under various departments in Srinagar city will transfer the same to SMC. The corporation will also pay the electricity bill of all streetlights to PDD accordingly.

It was given out that SMC will also prepare ward-wise report on number of streetlights in Srinagar and a project report for cent percent conversion to LED lights would be prepared. PDD officials informed the meeting that under RAPDRP a separate cable would be installed along with bunch cabling that will ensure reliable electric connection to all streetlights.

The meeting was also informed that Rs 6 crore DPR has been prepared for modernization of 21 streetlights in Srinagar and the same will be submitted under AMRUT to centre.
