SRINAGAR: The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon Tuesday called for restoration of pristine glory of historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar to make it a centre of attraction for tourists and locals.
The Divisional Commissioner was speaking during a meeting with the representatives of Association of Hotel and Restaurant Operators of Lal Chowk (AHROL) to discuss issues regarding the development of the citys key business hub.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Vice Chairman LAWDA, SP Traffic and other officers were also present in the meeting.
During the meeting, traders of Lal Chowk put forth various issues before the Divisional Commissioner who gave a patient hearing to all their issues and demands. The Div Com directed the concerned to take immediate measures for their redressal.
The traders demanded repairs of streetlights, better sanitation facilities, better public transport facility, 24X7 power supply.
Dr Samoon directed the concerned authorities to ensure restoration of defunct streetlights at an earliest. It was given out in the meeting that 60 MLD sewerage treatment plant is coming up at Aloochibagh, which will cater to the needs of Lal Chowk and surrounding areas. Economic Reconstruction Agency will upgrade the dewatering station at Lal Chowk.
Officials of PDD informed the meeting that upgradation of entire power distribution network in the area would be started on priority within the next three months.
Regarding public transport Dr Samoon directed the concerned officials to ensure that passenger buses stop at designated bus stops only and encroachments from footpaths are removed.
He appealed the shopkeepers to cooperate with the administration in making Lal Chowk pedestrian friendly place.
The meeting was further informed that two huge car parking lots are available in Lal Chowk, which should be used by shopkeepers instead of keeping cars in front of their shops.
The Divisional Commissioner informed the meeting that Master Plan of Srinagar city would be completed by May 2016 and in the comprehensive plan every need has been taken care of. He said that the Mini Tourist Centre would be inaugurated in the next couple of months and landscaping of Lal Chowk would also be expedited for the increase of tourist footfall in the City Centre.
Dr Samoon also gave directions for release of Rs 10 crore to District Development Commissioner Srinagar for flood-affected traders.
