There is a long history of unpopular decisions being imposed on Kashmiris. By taking these decisions the rulers, both local and national, have always tried to impose their own ideology so that the struggle of Kashmiris for their independence is suppressed. But time has proved that these decisions have been rejected by the people of the state and they have often found an opportunity to raise their voice against the atrocities, suppression and inhuman approach towards them and have succeeded in projecting their case before the world. Today, we see that the whole World acknowledges their right to freedom.
It was almost 180 years back when British rulers sold this whole state to the Dogras. This decision is termed as a blot on the face of democracy and human values. Since it was against the aspirations of the people of the state, they raised their voices in anger against this decision and finally the last Dogra ruler was compelled to flee. Realizing that there was no chance to regain his power in the state, he, unfortunately, decided to sign an accord of accession with India against the will of the people of the state. This unfortunate decision was not only against the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. But also because the reason of discord between India and Pakistan. The wars that followed not only resulted in huge loss of lives but also led to the division of Kashmir. The issue was discussed in UN Security Council where resolutions were passed, asking both the countries to give kashmiris on both sides the right to self-determination .This was a big achievement for kashmiris but unfortunately the Indian government denied this right to the people of the state. In order to compel the government to act upon the resolutions granted in favour of thekashmiris, a struggle under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was launched. The government in retaliation arrested him and his colleagues, but the people of Kashmir continued the struggle bearing all sorts of difficulties. After 22years Mr. Sheikh Abdullah decided to give up this struggle against which he was offered the job of being the CM of the state .This decision too was opposed by the people as it once again was against their aspirations. Abrave son of this land called Mohammad MaqboolBhat, then started an armed struggle along with his colleagues but he was arrested and hanged in Tiharjail. Soon after his hanging, his ideology regarding freedom became quite popular in the state particularly in the minds of the new generation, who embraced it and choose to fight against the atrocities and the inhuman approach towards the kashmiris by the occupational forces. Similarly more unpopular decisions were made like the hanging of Mr. Afzal Goroo. This too resulted in widespread agitation. Recently one more unpopular decision was taken when Mr. Mufti Sayeed, the late CM of the state formed a coalition government with BJP,a Hindu Nationalist party. BJP only hopes to merge the state fully with the Indian union so that they can thrust their ideology on the people of the state. This includes suppressing the ongoing struggle for freedom, changing the demography of the state, imposition of common civil code, abrogation of Article370 and much more. The Peoples Democratic Party has found a rare chance to rectify its mistake. If Ms. Mehbooba Mufti decides to follow in her late fathers footsteps, this will yet again be another unpopular decision and will have long reaching consequences. Moreover there is a strong opposition to this decision within the party and if she goes ahead with this decision, a fight for power struggle within the party is clear. Can Mehbooba afford this or will it announce the end of PDPs rule in the state? Much needs to be seen.
