Rain, snow likely in Kashmir

Kashmir valley is likely to receive moderate rain in the plains and snowfall in upper reaches in the next 36 hours, a MET department official said here Friday.

The month of February until now has received a rainfall of 20mm against the expected of 70mm rainfall as per stats of weather department. “The condition is not alarming as we still have 10 days to go,” says Director Metrology Sonam Lotus.

The winter in Kashmir mostly went dry this season raising concerns among orchardists and farmers of ‘water scarcity’ during peak season and inadequate ‘chilling season’ necessary for production.

The records show that 1986 winter also was dry with no amount of rainfall.

Experts attribute this ‘dry phenomena’ to weak western disturbance, growing urbanization, scant forest cover and various other factors.
