Anantnag: The residents of Anantnag district and Nowgam locality in Srinagar today demanded safe drinking water.
Residents of Harnag, Khadipora, Kinar Mohalla, Allahipora area of South Kashmirs Anantnag district blocked vehicular traffic on Sriagar-Jammu Highway on Thursday, demanding safe water supply in their areas.
The residents did not allow the traffic disrupted to move in the morning. Vehicles were jammed nearly for two kilometers. Even long-distance buses and trucks were stranded on the highway.
The women protestors said that they are getting unsafe drinking water in their areas from past five years. We have been forced to take streets as we are getting unsafe water which lead to infectious diseases. We appeal authorities concerned to supply drinking water from Bumzoo filtration plant to our areas, the protesters said.
Executive Engineer PHE and AEE PHE, Anantnag, reached the spot and assured the protesters that their genuine grievances will be redressed soon.
The officials told KNS that the department is facing paucity of funds and thus the demand of locals was not met.
We have informed higher ups to take necessary steps in this regard. Now, the matter will be taken into serious consideration for the welfare of protesting inhabitants, the official said.
Meanwhile, the residents in Abu Baker colony of Nayak Bagh in Nowgam area of Srinagar told KNS that they are facing shortage of safe dirinking water from the last week.
The PHE department would send a water tanker for drinking water for past several years. But it has been stopped from last week. Despite complaints to the department concerned, water tanker was not sent to our locality, the residents told KNS.
