Srinagar: Terming the National Food Security Act (NFSA) an anti-public law, hundreds of people in various localities Tuesday staged protest, demanding its roll back.
The law was implemented in J&K on February 15, this year. The law guarantees five Kg rice per person for a month. The protestors alleged that store keepers at ration depots are further making deduction from the quantity, providing only three Kg rice for one person.
Protests and stone pelting erupted at Rainawari here against the implementation of Act, people demanding its revocation.
Protestors assembled at main road and fired tyres, raised pro-justice slogans, to express resentment against the NFSA. They said that the controversial Act has forced them to starvation. The continuous protests on main road resulted in massive traffic jam for long.
We demand immediate revocation of this Act. Scientifically, an individual needs 13 Kg rice per month for consumption. Under NFSA, the authorities have announced 5 Kg for per person. The situation went from bad to worse as store keepers are reducing the quantity from 5Kg to 3Kg per persons, said protestors to CNS.
After a brief scuffle between protestors and police, protestors resorted to stone pelting.
The anti NFSA protesters were also held at Bohri Kadal, Khanyar, Nowpora, Barbar Shah, Khwaja Bazar and adjacent localities of these areas. The protestors, shouting slogans against the act, in these areas blocked roads resulting massive traffic jams. They were demanding the immediate revocation of the act, according to which every family member is entitled to five kilograms of ration every month.
