MelbourneWest Indies left-handed opening batsman Chris Gayle, who has been imported by Melbourne Renegades for the fifth edition of Big Bash League, blasted a 12-ball half century against Adelaide Strikers in a crunch game at the Docklands Stadium on Monday evening to equal the fastest ever half-century in Twenty20.
The 36-year-old Gayle had equaled the Indian veteran all-rounder Yuvraj Singh’s record for the fastest half century in T20 history when he hit a massive six on the bowling of Strikers off spinner Travis Head.
In 2007 ICC World Twenty20 Championship, Yuvraj Singh had set the record in Durban when he had smashed Englands fast bowler Stuart Broad for 6 consecutive sixes in an over.
Without doing further damage, Gayle was dismissed by Travis Head for 56 off 17 balls, after trying to hit the ball out of the park.
Gayle after his blitz received a standing ovation from the crowd before waving his bat.
After the destructive start, Chasing 171 Renegades batsmen struggled to register the win and keep hopes alive as they were bundled out for 143 in 15.3 overs. The men donning red were beaten by 27 runs and were eliminated.
Renegades, who finished 5th on the table had to chase down the target in less than 16 overs to qualify for the semi-finals
Gayle who was recently hit by controversies was seen signing the autographs for the Renegade fans at the fence soon after achieving the feat.
Earlier, Gayle made his Big Bash return only after paying a hefty $10,000 for sparking a sexism row.
