Share

GANDERBAL: A much prized musk deer that had come down from the forest following snowfall recently was captured by locals early morning in Kangan area of Ganderbal district, eyewitnesses said.

A police official confirmed to Kashmir Observer that soon after receiving information that a wild animal has been held captive by locals in Lar area of Kangan in Ganderbal district was recovered by personals of police station Kangan from locals.

He said that immediately wildlife authorities were informed and later it was handed over to them.

A Wildlife official while talking to Kashmir Observer said that the musk deer was taken to Dachigam wildlife Sanctuary.

“The deer was frightened and had come to the area following the recent snowfall,” he said.

Meanwhile sources said that the animal had died due to improper handling by the time wildlife officials arrived.

However it was not officially confirmed whether the animal was alive or dead.

Musk deer are herbivores, living in hilly, forested environments, generally far from human habitation. Like true deer, they eat mainly leaves, flowers, and grasses, with some mosses and lichens. They are solitary animals, and maintain well-defined territories, which they scent mark with their caudal glands. Musk deer are generally shy, and either nocturnal, or crepuscular.
