SRINAGAR: After 16 days long shutdown in South Kashmirs Pulwama district, the deadlock ended Friday after government agreed in principle to meet the demands of people.
Reports quoting official sources said that a detailed meeting with civil administration, traders and members of the civil society was held in which it was decided that the demands of the civilian population will be fulfilled at earliest.
Sources said that in the meeting, apart from construction of memorial of martyr, administration agreed that all the detained youth will be released, and have assured the people that there would be no further raids or other harassment of the civilians in the district.
After the detailed meeting held between administration and locals, normal life returns in the district
Meanwhile, Kashmir Traders Manufacturing Federation (KTMF), Muhammad Yasin Khan in a statement appreciated the role of Pulwama inhabitants particularly traders who showed exemplary commitment towards the cause.
He said that after the end of the deadlock in the district, the normal life returns.
Pertinently, since last 15 days, all shops and business establishments in Pulwama town remained closed. All the semi-government offices and petrol pumps were also closed and traffic was off the roads.
Pulwama was observing shutdown since January 1 after police foiled an attempt of locals to erect a Martyrs Memorial plaque in a graveyard in the town near Rajpora Chowk.
After police denied locals to put up the plaque in the graveyard, youth of the area took to roads and staged protest demonstrations. Since January 1, youth were regularly clashing with the police and paramilitary personnel and engaging in pitched battles with the cops.
Police had also arrested many people from the town. However, they were later released.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legislator, Muhammad Khalil Bandh, on Thursday has said that the administration has failed to deliver on its promises to the people.
Bandh has said that he approached Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Asgar Samoon, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gilani to resolve the crisis.
Even after the promises made by the administration to resale arrested youth and install a small sign board, nothing has been done in this regard as no such step has been taken so far to resolve the issue, the MLA Pulwama has said. (KNS)
