LahoreThe Lahore High Court has rejected a petition challenging the inclusion of fast bowler Mohammad Aamir in the national cricket team. The petition was filed in the High Court on Monday.
According to details, the petition had asked the court to review the decision regarding Aamirs return in the side, saying the bowler had brought disgrace to the image of the country.
A one-member bench of Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan rejected the petition, according to the Pakistan Cricket Boards legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi.
I pleaded the case on behalf of the PCB and our opinion is that Amir completed his ban and as per countrys constitution he has every right to play cricket, Rizvi told AFP.
The judge on hearing the arguments rejected the petition filed by a lawyer, Munsif Awan, he added.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Selector Haroon Rasheed reiterated that the Board has given his selection committee clearance to select Aamir for the tour of New Zealand that will be held in next month.
We have been given the clearance to select Amir for the New Zealand tour. But unfortunately though, we arent yet sure about his visa due to the ongoing Christmas and New Year vacations. If the travel arrangements are made in time, we are likely to select him, said Haroon.
The PCB has sought legal opinion on Aamirs travel arrangements since a convicted person isnt allowed to travel to New Zealand under normal circumstances, with the boards lawyers processing relevant documents to ensure that the left-armer gets a visa to square-up against the Black Caps at their home grounds.
Haroon added that Karachis left-arm pacer Rumman Raees, who was in consideration for the tour, is out of contention after suffering from a bout of illness. Rumman is unfortunately down with an infection and will need some time to recuperate, he said.
Aamirs ban was relaxed in January this year and he was allowed to play domestic matches. At the time of the ban, Aamir was tipped as one of the most talented fast bowlers in the world.
Since his return, he has taken 22 wickets in four non first-class games, while his tally of wickets in the qualifying rounds of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy stood at 34.
Aamir along with the then Test captain Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were charged with accepting money in exchange for arranging deliberate no-balls during a Test match at Lords in England in 2010.
The three players and their agent Mazhar Majeed were jailed by a British court in 2011. Amir, Salman and Asif were also banned from cricket for five years. But in September this year the International Cricket Council (ICC) lifted sanctions against the three players.
Legendary Pakistan pacemen Imran Khan and Wasim Akram have also backed Amirs return to international cricket.
