SRINAGAR: Amid escalating controversy over Doodh Ganga Water Supply Scheme in Charisharief-Chadoora area of Budgam district, a local leader of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and brother of State’s Agriculture Minister resigned from the party post on Saturday.

Nazir Ahmad Lone, who was working as District Coordinator of PDP, said that he resigned as mark of protest against ongoing work.

“I have resigned. People are objecting to the scheme as it will create drought like situation in Charisharief, Chadoora and its adjoining villages. There would be drinking water problem and also irrigation problem,” Nazir, who is the brother of Minister Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjoora, said.

He said that the work on the scheme is going against the interests and amid “atrocities” on locals. “They started to beat people, ransack houses and break glasses of mosques since the work began. It is still going on. They are working and beating people simultaneously,” he alleged.

Throwing the weight behind the protest locals, he said that their demand was genuine and asked government to respect their concerns.

“If people have resented against it, why is government continuing with the scheme. There is no need to restart the work and the genuine demand of the locals must be respected,” he said. GNS)
