Cong chief under house arrest

Srinagar: JK Congress chief G A Mir was today put under house arrest by police ahead of his visit to Chadoora where locals are protesting against construction of a water supply scheme. Mir said that police put him under house arrest to scuttle his programme of meeting the aggrieved people in Chadoora area.

“It is shame that the government is not allowing even leaders of mainstream political parties to meet aggrieved people to hear their grievances and express solidarity with them,” Mir said.

Protests have gripped Chrar-e-Sharief and Chadoora following the villagers’ opposition to construct water supply scheme as they fear the scheme, constructed by Economic Reconstruction Agency, will dry up water supply schemes which are already built on Doodh Ganga stream.
