Clashes continue in Chadoora

Srinagar: Scores of people were injured as clashes erupted for the second straight day amid a shutdown in Chadoora area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district against the work on water supply scheme over Doodh Ganga River.

Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of people today again attempted to stop the work on the water supply scheme but contingents of police and CRPF who were additionally deployed stopped them, triggering clashes.

During the stone-pelting clashes in Chadoora parts including in Main Town, scores of people were injured as forces resorted to teargas shelling and baton charge. The locals in return also resorted to heavy stone pelting. During the clashes, the locals alleged that forces went berserk and broke the glasses and windowpanes of scores of houses.

Some of the houses which were damaged allegedly by government forces include of Bashir Ahmad Bhat , Nazir Ahmad Malla, Ghulam Nabi Bhat, Abdul Ahad, Abdul Rashid Malik, Ghulam Muhammad Malla, Muhammad Ramzan Malla, Farooq Ahmad Malla and Mushtaq Ahmad Malla.

Meanwhile, the locals of Chadoora alleged that Agriculture Minister Ghulam Nabi Hanjoora, who is also the resident of Hanjoor village of “betrayal”. “Before coming to power the Minister assured us that he is with the locals with regard to the water supply scheme and opposed any work over it. However now he has changed his tune and is favouring his son Gowhar Lone, who has the contract of the water supply scheme,” the locals alleged.

The locals meanwhile today vowed to continue their agitation till the work on the scheme is not stopped. “We will not stop and would continue our protests,” they added. Pertinent to mention here that left with only ten kilometers to work out, the ERA has already completed the scheme upto Chadoora running across Nawhar to Kralpora. Despite clashes the work continued for the second day on the water supply scheme.
