Illegal constructions rampant on agricultural land in Anantnag

Anantnag Dec22:-  Illegal constructions have been going on with impunity across Anantnag on agricultural land with the district administration turning a blind eye towards the issue.  The environmentalists and local residents blamed that the constructions are taking place with impunity in the district Anantnag and no action is being taken against the illegal encroachers. The administration put the onus on alleged political patronage for the rampant illegal constructions on agricultural land. The encroachments have been taking place for a long time and the paddy fields have been turned into mass of concrete. While talking to Kashmir Observer, Peer Mohd Iqbalsaid  that “Patches along the Sangam to Khannabal and Khannabal to Mirbazar stretches of the National Highway remain the worst affected. He also said that “schools, residential houses, automobile workshops and every kind of concrete structures have been mushrooming on these stretches for the last half a decade now.”

He further said that the people of the area have been accusing the authorities to be hand in glove with the land mafia, out to vandalize nature for petty interests.“ The highway has been turned into mass of concrete and the encroachments are more severe in the interiors but the government is still in deep slumber, they have to wake up and take action against this kind of illegal construction which is going on agriculture lands,” he added. Another resident, Rayees Janisaar said that the state has enough laws to prohibit the use of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes but only the implementation part from the concerned enforcing agencies is missing. “On one side the government has failed to assure that the agricultural land can be saved from human disaster. But, at the same time, we as individuals and society are only bothered to benefit ourselves,” he added When we contacted  Tehsildar Anantnag Ghulam Rasool, he said, “ we will take a step against new construction which is going on agricultural lands and we will stop these constructions in future but the construction which has been completed cannot be  dismantled now. The Government has  already banned a the construction in agriculture lands”, he added.
