Budgam Fish Production Increases to 1200 Quintals

BUDGAM:  In a significant achievement, the fish production in district Budgam has touched a high of 1200 quintals this year, so far, whereas the Trout Seed Production at Khag Fish Hatchery has registered a four- fold increase. The Trout production in private sector has also reached 100 quintals. With a view to give boost to the trout as well as Carp  fish production in the district, the work  on construction of a modern Trout Rearing Unit  at Surisyar Chadoora is in full  swing, whereas  the  Fish Farm at Basant-wuddar  has started production, thereby doubling the trout production in the district.

This was informed by the District Development Commissioner Budgam, Mir Altaf Ahmad while reviewing physical and financial achievements of the fisheries department in the district. He asked the officers and field staff to work out a comprehensive plan for optimum exploitation of vast fisheries potential available in the district.

On the occasion, Assistant Director Fisheries, Budgam informed that fish rearing in private sector has also gained momentum, adding that about 75 private fish farms have been established including 25 trout fish farms. He said more people are coming forward to seek expert guidance to establish their private Trout farms. He said an indoor facility for trout fish rearing is being created at Beeru Tehsil under Centrally Sponsored scheme RUVY which will also boost trout seed production in the district.

The District Development Commissioner asked the concerned officers to increase fish seed production through establishment of mini hatcheries in various potential areas of the district. He also urged for   generating awareness among the people especially unemployed youth about benefits of fish farming so that it could be adopted as a gainful income generating activity. He said trout fish is in great demand in national and international market which needs to be tapped through putting in place all available scientific and technological knowhow.
