Share

SRINAGAR: Denouncing military crackdown and ‘mass killings’ of Shia Muslims in Nigeria, hundreds of people staged protests for the fourth consecutive day in summer capital on Saturday.

The protesters carrying placards denouncing the Nigerian military were demanding release of Sheykh Ibrahim El-Zakzaki, the spiritual head of Shia community in the African nation, who has reportedly  been jailed in an injured condition.

Many of the protesters were also carrying the portraits of Sheykh El Zakzaki whose whereabouts have fueled concern after Nigerian military denied having him in their detention.

Sheykhs son and wife besides over 100 followers were killed after military launched an assault on his home and Hussayniayh in Zaria province.

Ikhwan-al Munatzirien group submitted a memorandum to the UN Observers office here at Sonwar and appealed United Nations to take note of the  massacre of the Muslims. They also urged UN to use its influence for the immediate release of Sheykh al-Zakzaki.

Protests in Barmulla, Pattan and Kargil called on Nigerian government to stop the crackdown and appealed International human rights   organizations to intervene.
