KCCI aghast at functioning of hospitals

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Inc) in its meeting recently have been receiving inputs about state administrative action which concern general public issues and are apt to tell upon the day to day business activity adversely in the valley.

Most important of them, according to the KCCI, is the health administration in so far as the working of the hospitals and health institutions in the valley are concerned.

“Be that the pediatrics care at GB Panth Hospital, Srinagar which recently lead to death of a large number of infants, tertiary/specialty care at SKIMS, SMHS Hospital, Bones & Joint Hospital or any other hospital at district Headquarters, the condition is not admirable at all,” secretary general, Faiz Ahmad Bakshi said in a press communiqué of the Inc said here yesterday. “The institutions are under staffed or are headed by such doctors who are not trained in Hospital management/ administration thus leading to deplorable conditions witnessed in these hospitals.”

Bakshi said that the recent development in relation to voluntary retirement sought by the Principal, GMC Srinagar who is otherwise known for his “integrity, honesty and commitment” to human health has brought up yet again a controversy. “It is leading to resentment amongst the doctors which in turn reflects on the patients care and general administration of Hospitals in Kashmir Valley,” the statement said.

He said that the government has established J&K Medical Supply Corporation to be a nodal agency for procurement of all medical supplies of drugs, surgical devices, equipments/ machinery and hospital furniture etc which is indeed a welcome step. “The conditions laid for the legitimate local suppliers intending to make such supplies, however, are too difficult to comply with and are apprehended to amount to deprivation of local suppliers from getting opportunity to serve the community.”

He requested the concerned authorities of the Health Department to have the conditions laid by the J&K Medical Supply Corporation redrafted to make it easier for the local suppliers to compete.
