Brari Nambal Lagoon On Verge of Extinction

Srinagar:  People living adjacent to the Brari nambal in Srinagar city Saturday appealed authorities to restore the pristine glory of the lagoon. They alleged that due to official apathy the lagoon is on the verge of extinction while no efforts are being made to check the encroachments.

A delegation led by a respectable citizen Ghulam Rasool Dar said that authorities are making no efforts to conserve this water body and it is on the verge of extinction. The delegation said that

unabated encroachments and pollution have drastically affected the flora and fauna of Brari Nambal lagoon. They said that heaps of garbage, unending stretch of obnoxious weeds, agricultural fields and stinking waters are the only remnants of this once sparkling lagoon.

The delegation alleged that vested interest elements have encroached upon a major chunk of the lagoon near the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). Scores of hutments, shops and automobile workshops have come up illegally by filling up a large area of the lagoon. “It is heartening to see Brari Nambal dying a silent death. We are mulling to stage protests on daily basis if authorities fail to take measures for its conservation. (CNS)
