CRPF vacate 25-year old Srinagar bunker

SRINAGAR: Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vacated a 25 year-old bunker from Kawdara area of Srinagar city.

Locals have heaved a sigh of relief after the paramilitary CRPF abandoned the bunker. “We couldn’t move during the later hours as the CRPF would put strict restrictions upon the public movement,” said Fayaz Ahmad, a Kawdara resident. “Women folk, in particular, faced a lot of difficulties as they wouldn’t dare to move freely.”

Another resident said that the old town owing to its congestion of houses presented a unique set up and it was highly embarrassing to see the CRPF personnel almost peek into our kitchens. “It was difficult for the womenfolk to do their normal routine work in presence of the ubiquitous CRPF men,” said Ajaz Ahmad. “Moroever, they would, by their sheer presence, entice youngsters to throw stones on the bunker and in retaliation, the entire locality would suffer.”

Meanwhile MLC Khursheed Alam who was present during the vacation process said that the government was committed to extend comfort and relief to the residents.

Terming removal of the bunker as fulfillment of Chief Minister’s commitment, Alam said more such bunkers will be removed in future if situation remained peaceful. “Improvement in situation would help government to focus on welfare and development of the state,” he said.
