Earth Digging Sparks Protests

SRINAGAR: Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators who were protesting against digging of earth near the bund of Jehlum river in Bandipora today.

Official sources said hundreds of people, mostly women, took to streets at Mujgund blocking Srinagar-Bandipora road, alleging that some land grabbers were digging earth near the bund of river Jehlum.

The demonstrators, raising anti-government slogans, did not allow any traffic on the road, demanding immediate halt of digging of earth and arrest of all those involved in it.

They said digging of earth would weaken the bund of the river which has already been damaged due to September last year floods.

However, when the demonstrators refused to disperse and allow traffic on the busy road, security forces resorted to lathicharge followed by bursting of teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators, who were pelting stones.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road for several hours.
