Ladakh based Drukpa nuns on cycle yatra from Nepal to India

Srinagar: More than 250 kung fu nuns of the Ladakh based Drukpa Order have commenced an arduous cycle yatra from Kathmandu in Nepal across the Indian states of Bihar and UP to create awareness for women empowerment and environment consciousness.

The Cycle Yatra, led by His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, is currently passing through Bihar. The Yatra will cover over 2,200 kilometres from Kathmandu passing through the Indian states of UP and Bihar through Gorakhpur, Gaya, Patna, Rajgir, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur and Agra before culminating in Delhi on the 9th of January 2016.

Highlighting various aspects of the Cycle Yatra and the route, His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, founder of Live to Love global humanitarian initiative, environmentalist, and United Nations MDG Award Honoree said, “The Cycle Yatra points to the independent and collective will power of women and their equivalence with men; the use of a vehicle that is environment friendly sends a strong message of conservation and environment friendliness.” He said that the relationship between Nepal and India is symbiotic. “It is and age old historical, cultural and religious relationship and our monasteries in both countries operate seamlessly to provide spiritual guidance to our followers. It is a natural route for us to travel from Nepal to India and vice versa,” he added.

The Drukpa order that originates from the Himalayan region of Ladakh in Jammu Kashmir state in India has built a strong history of community action and citizen empowerment for many years. In addition to pad yatras and collective action in times of need such as the recent earthquake in Nepal, the Drukpa order consistently supports environment issues and other social causes from time to time.Speaking further on the Cycle Yatra , the Gyalwand Drukpa said “The Cycle Yatra by Drukpa Kung Fu Nuns is significant in as much that it reminds us all of the immense strength that women embody and their will power. It is also a reminder that women play a huge role in conservation and environment consciousness and that they can be the biggest influencers in this campaign.”

The Yatra will pass through numerous towns and villages along the way where small meetings will be organized along the way for the Gyalwang Drukpa and the nuns to speak to local people on the importance of according equal rights to women and ensuring that ecological balance is maintained. The talks will touch upon community actions and finding organic solutions to farming, water, and soil management and the importance of conservation. The meetings will also highlight the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Mission and its importance to public and personal health, environment and quality of life.
