Known for its scenic beauty, Jawahirpora (Lam) is a beautiful village of Tehsil Aripal in Tral constituency. The snow-clad mountains, fresh water oozing out of springs, green meadows and beautiful Lam Nallah are some major attractions of this village.
Agriculture constitutes the mainstay of the economy of this village, besides a sizeable population working at various plum government positions does bolster the financial position.
However, there are no government interventions in the agricultural sector to boost the economy. Even if there are schemes dedicated to this sector, they somehow fail to reach the village for some unknown reasons. This lack of government interventions and programs has made the agriculture and its allied sectors less profitable for the people of this village. Therefore, there is an urgent need on part of the government to look into the matter and extend all the programs and schemes of government in the agriculture and allied sectors to this so far neglected village.
Geographically, the village is very close to Srinagar as most of the villages of district Pulwama are, however, the village is confronted with many problems almost in every area of life. Be it is healthcare, road connectivity, power supply or any other facility, the village has altogether been neglected. It seems that the village doesnt exist on the governance map of the state. There is a single road link that connects this village to the outside world but the dilapidated condition of the road makes travel cumbersome and even unsafe. Though the recent decision of the government to initiate a road project for Lam and the adjoining areas is encouraging and indeed a great step yet the hardships in the areas invite immediate attention. Government should start construction on priority basis so that great respite is provided to the people of the area.
The literacy rate of Lam is around 80% which is much above the state and national averages. This is despite the fact that there is no higher secondary school in the village despite a very high student population. The denial of such school to the village is discriminatory because the villages with lesser student populations in the state have already been provided with such facility. It is expected that the government will take appropriate steps in this direction.
Power supply to the village can only be compared to the dark ages only. The electricity supply is highly erratic. This has caused a great deal of anxiety in the people, especially the ones whose business is directly dependent on it. Hence, it is impressed upon the government to upgrade the transmission system from Aripal to Lam so that the power supply to the village and the adjacent villages is improved.
Finally, the village no doubt is beautiful with all types of people, professionals, academicians and others, however, the lack of modern facilities has made this village look like a leaf taken out of medieval era. If the government sincerely wishes to improve the condition of this village, it could serve as a model village.
