The Muslim Waqf Board in Jammu and Kashmir has been repeatedly falling prey to politics of bias and favour, while it’s a body that should be allowed to function independently if the poor and the community are to be served through it.
The board collects funds of crores of rupees every year but one fails to see where the money is spent.
The board must outsource collection and account-maintenance so that detailed and proper accounts can be maintained and the board also saves on it ever-short manpower.
Apparently not everything is fine with the board, with undeserving people getting inducted into the board as administrators etc.
The Waqf Board collects a lot of money from various shrines across the state but spends nothing on their maintenance and upkeep.
The shrine of Sakhi Zain ud din Wali (ra) in Sarbal Pahalgam is an example where the Waqf Board is collecting lakhs of rupees but hasn’t spent a penny on the shrine yet.
Needless to say, when the board that has the responsibility of maintaining and putting to good use, the community’s waqf properties, fails to deliver on the task it is entrusted with or lets itself succumb to the vested interests for petty political gain of influential people, it is something that we should be collectively taking a note of.
