Life is a divine gift: Abolish death penalty

Share

We live in a culture of death that surrounds us everywhere, even if it is hidden behind the robes of consumption and welfare. Delving a little is enough to see that this deadly poverty is present as it is, with a fierce selfishness, aggressive violence and disrespect for life, which is a divine gift. All seasoned by top hedonistic and materialistic ingredients that lead us to a state of nature where everything is allowed, where there is not the slightest moral reference.

Pope Francis has claimed the highest ideals of politics in the speech made before the US Congress in Washington. He demanded an end to the death penalty, he cried out against abortion and homosexual unions, criticized the arms trade and invited to rollover in protecting the environment and the poor.

He also recalled the need to “preserve and defend human life at all stages of its development.” That principle conflicts with the requirement that the US government wants to impose on catholic hospitals and medical centers to practice abortion and distribute contraceptives in their facilities. Speaking of the death penalty, he states that “a just and necessary punishment should never exclude the dimension of hope and the goal of rehabilitation.”

Moreover, the Commission on Human Rights of the UN adopted a resolution suggesting to all countries in the world to abolish the death penalty, defend the dignity and the inalienable rights of every human person, at every moment of his existence. We must abolish the death penalty worldwide. Nothing justifies the death penalty. The life of a human being is the exclusive property of God.

“The human being is to be respected and treated as a person from the moment of conception; and therefore from that same moment his rights as a person must be recognized, among which in the first place is the inviolable right of every innocent human being to life”, wrote John Paul II in the encyclical “Evangelium vitae”.
