Arrest of youth sparks protest in Kulgam

Kulgam: People blocked Kulgam-Anantnag road on Wednesday after a Special Operation Group (SOG) team raided Sumo Stand Yaripora and apprehended three persons including a Sumo driver. 

From past week at least 8 persons have been picked up by government forces during nocturnal raids and have been taken to unknown destinations.

Eyewitnesses said that an SOG team appeared in Yaripora Kulgam Sumo Stand and whisked away three persons. Locals identified the arrested persons as Ishtiyaq Ahmed Mir son of Abdul Gani and Tariq Ahmed Wagay son of Ghulam Qadir both residents of Kanji Kulla Yaripora. The identity of the third arrested person who hails from Kakapora has not been ascertained.

Reports said that soon after the arrest of the trio, people including Sumo drivers blocked Kulgam-Islamabad road and demanded their immediate release. Police and district administration officials assured them that they will look into the matter and all the arrested persons would be released.

Pertinently, government forces picked up three persons during a nocturnal raid in Havoora hamlet two days ago. They were identified by locals as Bashir Ahmed Alaie son of Abdul Hameed, Ghulam Muhammad Alaie son of Muhammad Ahsan and Parvez Ahmed Lone son of Muhammad Abdullah. From Rampora Kulgam area, government forces also arrested two persons identified as Showkat Molvi and Muhammad Abbas Sheikh. (CNS)
