Srinagar: Terming operational research and optimization techniques as basis for achieving breakthrough in cutting-edge research Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir Prof Talat Ahmad today strongly recommended that there should be job openings for students of statistics with special knowledge of operations research in both government and private sector.
While presenting his valedictory address on the concluding day of the 3-day International Conference on Operations Research for Data Analytics and Decision Analysis ICORDADA-13 organized by Department of Statistics University of Kashmir in conjunction with 46th annual convention of Operational Research Society of India (ORSI) Prof Talat said I have a strong belief that the students who pursue statistics at PG level should be given some preference in jobs both in government sector as well as in corporate world while they go for recruitment of various posts where knowledge of statistical tools and techniques is very important.
We will surely try to prevail upon the various stakeholders in government to keep this as essential qualification while advertising the posts which are of statistical nature and where general accountancy is more data-based, said VC KU.
Prof Talat added that efforts would also be made to coordinate and motivate the representatives and authorities at ORSI to launch a chapter in Srinagar as well so that the promotion and propagation of application of operational research in various sphere of life gets a boost in the valley.
He said that this chapter will help in giving impetus to the idea of creating awareness about the usefulness of statistical tools, optimizations techniques and operations research in managing records efficiently in government departments as well as in the industry.
Reiterating his earlier call that a course in research methodology should be made compulsory for those doing research in any subject Prof Talat while hoping that the recommendations of the 3-day conference would prove fruitful for the state and the nation said that the University would continue to extend all its support in hosting and organizing such conferences of multi-disciplinary nature.
On the occasion Prof Talat distributed mementos amongst various experts and academicians including Prof MAK Beigh, Prof Tariq Rashid Jan, Prof Sheikh Parvez and others who chaired the various technical sessions of the 3-day long conference.
Presenting the conference report and recommendations Head Department of Statistics KU and General Chair ICORDADA-13 Prof Aquil Ahmad said that the 3-day conference has strongly recommended that the techniques and methods of operations research and optimization need to be applied to education sector, agriculture and to various government departments for achieving effective results and better governance.
He added that the conference has also recommended that the knowledge of statistics should be made essential while filing up the various posts in government departments including those of statistical assistant, statistical investigator and statistical officer.
Speaking on the occasion Prof PR Reddy, President ORSI while expressing his gratitude to the support extended by KU in organizing this mega event said that he is looking forward to the opening of ORSI chapter at Srinagar and said that once the chapter is launched it will help in the dissemination of knowledge and information about the importance of operations research in various aspects of life in the valley and promote innovative ways of learning so that more and more students choose statistics and mathematics as their subjects.
