Motorcycle Borne Militants Strike In Awantipur

AWANTIPUR: People ran for their lives when two motor-cycle borne suspected militants opened indiscriminate firing on a joint police and CRPF patrol in Awantipur Chowk on Wednesday.

At least two civilians, including a woman, received bullet injuries who were rushed to Srinagar for treatment.

Reports said that a joint patrolling party of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF personnel were on way to police station Awantipur when they came under heavy fire from suspected militants at Awantipur Chowk.

Police sources said that two motor-cycle borne militants appeared in Chowk and fired indiscriminately upon patrolling party. Suspected militants, soon after showering bullets fled from the spot. Two civilians including a lady was hit with bullets. They were identified as Farzana Banoo wife of Dr Suhail Ahmed, resident of Rawalpora Srinagar and Mohammad Rafiq a resident of Achabal Kokarnag.

A police party immediately rushed both of the injured to SKIMS where their condition was stated to be stable.

Police said that forces exercised maximum restraint and did not retaliate. “In order to save precious human lives, our men exercised restraint and did not fire upon the assailants,” he said.

Eyewitnesses said that both the injured civilians were traveling in a Tavera Taxi coming from Islamabad to Srinagar when the attack took place. “Their vehicle came under heavy fire and they received bullets during the firing incident,” one of the eyewitnesses said.

Sources said that indiscriminate firing created panic in the area. “Shopkeepers downed their shutters and along with pedestrians ran for their lives. Traffic came to a halt on Highway for about half an hour,” a resident said.
